Back to Basics

I have a few things on the sewing table, but for the moment I'm just going to share this one:

It's a beginner's quilt - super simple. I waffled on the fabric choice because chevrons are beyond trendy right now - until I remembered that it's just as silly to avoid something because it's trendy as it is to do it only because it is. Hopefully this little quilt will last long after the world has forgotten that Pinterest told us all that we Must. Love. Chevrons.

I'm making the quilt for a class that I'm auditing in order to prepare to teach it later in the year. Super excited about that! I'm thinking this wee quilt will be the first item I stow away for our future children. I hestiated to write that - it seems like nowadays people think that's either A) bad luck B) crazy or C) too risky in case anything goes sideways in the family planning department. But critics be damned, I'm starting a for-future-baby-box. (Which can always become a ready-made-gifts-box if need be.)

The textured shawl is coming along just fine as well:

I am absolutely IN LOVE with this yarn (Aslan Trends King Baby Llama and Mulberry Silk). In fact, I'm in love with this yarn company. I have a few skeins of their Royal Alpaca waiting in the wings and I cannot WAIT to make something with it.

But for now, I'm just enjoying this knit.

  1. How exciting, a class!!

I started some quilt squares last year but it really failed to get me going.

    1. I've made a number of quilts in the past and enjoyed them - there's something very satisfying to me about a project you don't have to fit! It really appeals to my perfectionist... being so precise and persnickity about the details. But I don't have much need for one myself (my Mom and some of my extended family members were/are quilters, so I have more than enough) and they're usually a bit beyond my budget as a gift. I'm pretty glad to have an excuse to make one! I have another on the back burner as a gift for my Dad but I'm totally stuck on the fabric choices.

  3. oh the yarn! it looks like it sparkles! it's going to be gorgeous... keep us updated on the quilt as well, i am fascinated by people who have the patience to piece all those tiny fabric pieces together.

    1. I does almost sparkle - that's the silk, I'm guessing!

You definitely have to love both precision and repetition to find any joy in quilting, that's for sure!

  4. I love the chevrons - can't wait to hear more about the class you'll be teaching. So exciting. I agree with you about starting a future-baby-box! I had one and you know what - the stats are that 90% of couples will be pregnant within a year of starting to try. I think those are pretty great stats :)

    1. We should meet up sometime soon and I can tell you all about it! It's been a long time since I've seen you. Knitting/coffee date sometime?

Thanks for the support on the baby box idea! Some people really do seem to think it's nuts but it just seems practical to me.

  5. I wish I'd made more stuff for a future baby before I got pregnant. I didn't knit nearly as much while pregnant ad I had hoped to. I'll probably start crafting for number 2 earlier.

    1. Actually I do remember you saying something to this effect and it's stuck with me from a practicality standpoint. There really is no way to predict how much I'll be able to get done once a baby is actually in the works! And it's important to me to get a certain number of things done beforehand.

  6. I think starting a future baby box is a fantastic idea. Now that my baby is almost here, I'm panicking. I've got so many things I want to do and not enough time. Not to mention the fact that you truly don't want to do a whole lot when pregnant. Good luck with everything!

  7. That is going to be such a cute little quilt! I've been trying to get a 'future baby' box going for years, but I keep giving things away, so it's pretty much empty. I should really try to ramp that up...
